The next Sustainable Energy Challenge Summer School will be taking place 19th - 22nd July 2010.
Mankind's quality of life is dependent on ever more sophisticated levels of technology and the energy which powers it. In recent history this has been amply provided by fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas; but these aren't infinite resources and their conversion into energy releases by-products which pollute the environment and affect the earth's climate. The challenge is on to find alternative energy sources.
Organised in conjunction with the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Engineering Education Scheme links teams of four year 12 students and their teacher with local companies to work on engineering, scientific and technological- based problems. Offering invaluable experience of working with industrial partners on live projects, the scheme aims to prepare the students for future studies and eventual careers. The six month programme includes a launch event, 3 day residential workshop and celebration day.
The Institution of Civil Engineers Graduates and Students Committee for the North East region runs an annual Creative Construction competition with support from the School of Civil Engineering and Geosciences and the Faculty of Science, Agriculture and Engineering. Events are run in schools throughout the year with the winning team from each school invited to compete in an on-campus final event.
